The capital of Mato Grosso registered 258 thousand consumers with credit restrictions in the month of June this year, which corresponds to 48% of the adult population of Cuiabá. The survey by SPC Brasil for the Chamber of Store Managers of Cuiabá (CDL Cuiabá) points out that, in the annual comparison, the number of defaulters in Cuiabá grew 5.05% compared to June last year, but is below that recorded in Mato Grosso in the same period, which was 7.61%.

In the monthly comparison, there was a reduction of 0.65% compared to May, but the percentage still remains high and reinforces the concern of the business entity with the compromising of the income of families in Cuiabá.

SPC Brasil also presents the profile of this consumer: 52.04% of defaulters in Cuiabá are men and 47.66% women, with an average age of 45.4 years. The age group from 30 to 39 years old is the most representative, accounting for 25.45% of cases, followed by the groups from 40 to 49 years old (23.62%) and from 50 to 64 years old (21.66%).

Each consumer with credit restrictions in the capital owes, on average, R$6,577.36, adding up all outstanding debts. The average debt delay time is 29.3 months and more than a third of debts (34.4%) are in arrears between one and three years, and 22.73% have been unpaid for more than four to five years.

The banking sector accounts for the largest share of these debts, with 60.66%, followed by commerce (14.72%), water and electricity (9.88%), communication (2.92%) and other segments (11.82%).

The president of CDL Cuiabá, Júnior Macagnam, points out that the numbers reinforce the need to expand access to financial education as a tool for prevention and rebalancing household accounts.

"Financial education is still one of the most appropriate tools to help families organize their budget and avoid excessive debt. But we also need to draw attention to a problem that has been getting worse: online gambling. This type of gambling has caused real financial and family disruption, leading people to compromise their income, take out loans and take on high debts," noted the business leader.

Default in MT – In June, the default rate of consumers in Mato Grosso showed growth of 7.61% compared to the same period in 2025. Data from SPC Brasil shows 48.34% in the state, that is, almost half of the adult population, accumulates credit restrictions and high-value debts.
