Written and directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, the film will be 17 minutes long and feature two versions of Marilyn. Dakota will play the artist in her youth, while Ellen Burstyn, 93, will play a fictional representation of the actress at an age she never reached.
The production imagines the paths that Marilyn's career and life could have followed if she had lived for more decades. The actress died on August 5, 1962, at the age of 36.
"I find her interpretation fascinating, strange, intense and full of joy, at the same time as it is deeply disturbing. I wondered what would have happened if she had had another 60 years to herself. What could be different about the work she would do now?", declared Maggie Gyllenhaal to "Vanity Fair" magazine.
The filmmaker stated that Dakota was already in her thoughts during the project's creation process. The characterization does not only seek to physically reproduce Marilyn, but to build a version of the actress based on her trajectory, her performances and the possibilities that were interrupted by her early death.
Ellen Burstyn, Oscar winner and known for productions such as “The Exorcist”, “Interstellar” and “The Last Picture Show”, will bring the older version of the character to life.
“Flesh Impact” will screen out of competition at the Venice International Film Festival, scheduled to take place between September 2 and 12, 2026.
The launch is part of the tributes to the centenary of the birth of Marilyn Monroe, born on June 1, 1926, in Los Angeles.
