SÃO PAULO, SP (FOLHAPRESS) - A capybara died after being rescued with an arrow stuck in its body at the Guarapiranga dam, in the M'Boi Mirim region, south of São Paulo. Found by bathers on Sunday (26), the animal was taken for veterinary care, but did not survive its injuries.

The suspicion, according to the GCM (Metropolitan Civil Guard), is that the capybara was a victim of illegal hunting.

The animal was located by people who were on the banks of the dam, who called the GCM.

A team from the Capivari-Monos Environmental Inspectorate carried out the rescue and sent the animal to the Center for Management and Rehabilitation of Wild Animals, of the Municipal Department of Greenery and the Environment.

The capybara, however, died hours later from its injuries. According to the City of São Paulo, necroscopic examinations will be carried out to help identify the injuries and circumstances of death.

The person responsible for hitting the animal with the arrow was not located.

In a statement, the City of São Paulo stated that it "vehemently repudiates any act of violence against fauna" and highlighted that hurting or killing wild animals is an environmental crime, as provided for in the Environmental Crimes Law (Law No. 9,605/1998).

The municipal administration advises that residents who find injured or at-risk wild animals call the Metropolitan Environmental Civil Guard by calling 153 or contact the Wildlife Division (DFS) via WhatsApp (11) 95220-0219, available daily, from 8am to 5pm.

According to the city hall, technical teams provide guidance and make appropriate referrals to ensure the safety of the animal and people.
