Government of São Paulo postpones the start of free-flow tolls on the Anchieta and Imigrantes highways

Until the new system comes into operation, the current charge of R$40.60 remains at the existing tolls at Anchieta, in Riacho Grande, at km 31, and at Imigrantes, in Piratininga, at km 32. The value makes the toll on the highways that connect the capital to the coast of São Paulo the most expensive in Brazil.

The government of Tarcísio de Freitas defined the locations of the gates where the charge will be made after criticism from residents of a neighborhood in São Bernardo do Campo regarding the initial planning. The equipment on Rodovia dos Imigrantes, in the north direction, will be repositioned to the km 38 region. The southbound gantry will remain at km 29, while the Anchieta one will be maintained at km 33.

According to the São Paulo government, the decision was taken after dialogue and technical assessments carried out during the implementation of the system. According to state management, the change will allow “preserving local travel and expanding tariff fairness”, one of the objectives of the Siga Fácil program, as the free-flow charging system is called.

The repositioning will be carried out before electronic billing goes into operation. Therefore, it was necessary to reschedule the start date of operation. The government informed that the new schedule will be published after the completion of technical and administrative procedures.

Until then, the system will continue to work as it currently does, with a charge of R$40.60 only in the coastal direction. When the free-flow starts to operate, the value will be divided between the descent and ascent of the mountain. Thus, the driver will pay R$20.30 on the way there and R$20.30 on the way back.

Free-flow allows vehicles to pass through toll booths without stopping at booths or slowing down. The current squares will be deactivated and demolished in the coming months.

Whenever a vehicle passes through the electronic gantries, cameras will read the front and rear license plates in all lanes of the highway, including in situations of high speed, fog or heavy traffic.
