The first trip took place between June 29th and July 19th, heading to London, England. The teenager was accompanied by an educator. Afterwards, the court allowed her to go to Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic, between the 21st and 30th of July, alongside her paternal grandmother, Misako Matsunaga.
The authorizations were granted in May, in a process that is being processed under judicial secrecy. The young woman's situation once again drew attention after the premiere of “Elize: Shadows of a Woman”, a Netflix production released on July 22 and inspired by the crime that occurred in 2012.
Helena was raised by her grandparents Mitsuo and Misako Matsunaga since Elize was arrested for her husband's death. Custody remains with the paternal family, responsible for preserving the privacy of the teenager, who does not have a known public routine.
Elize is unable to visit or maintain contact with her daughter. The paternal grandfather has already declared that a possible rapprochement will have to be decided by Helena herself when she reaches the age of majority.
During the period she was imprisoned, Elize wrote letters addressed to her daughter. Part of these texts was published in the book “Piquenique no Inferno”. In one of the excerpts, she said she hoped to be forgiven by the teenager.
"I very much hope that one day you will forgive me. I do not intend to justify the unjustifiable," he wrote.
In another passage, Elize declared that she would not give up trying to regain her bond with Helena. According to information attributed to journalist Ullisses Campbell, author of the book “Elize Matsunaga: The Woman Who Dismembered her Husband”, the teenager had expressed interest at the age of 14 in finding her biological mother. The rapprochement, however, did not occur.
