When talking about bananas, potassium is one of the first nutrients that come to mind. However, he is far from the only one. The fruit is rich in several nutrients and is associated with several health benefits. But do you know what happens to your liver when you consume bananas? Check it out.

Are bananas good for your liver?Parade magazine spoke with gastroenterologist Qin Rao to understand how consuming bananas can influence liver health. According to the expert, one of the main benefits of the fruit is its high fiber content.

"Fiber helps maintain liver health by promoting a healthy weight, improving glycemic control and reducing the accumulation of fat in the organ. Additionally, they can reduce inflammation, which is important for preventing the progression of liver disease," explains Qin Rao.

The doctor also highlights the strong relationship between the intestine and the liver.

"The intestine and liver are closely linked by the so-called intestine-liver axis. Blood from the intestine goes directly to the liver, so substances produced in the digestive system can influence liver health. When the intestine is healthy, it helps reduce inflammation and promotes proper liver function," he says.

Just like bananas, other foods rich in fiber can also bring important health benefits. Potassium, another nutrient present in the fruit, also plays an important role.

"Potassium can contribute to liver health, helping to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce inflammatory processes. Some studies show that people with higher potassium intake have a lower risk of developing hepatic steatosis (fat in the liver) and liver fibrosis", says the expert.

Many people also wonder whether frequent consumption of bananas could represent an excess of sugar in the diet. According to Qin Rao, this is not usually a problem.

"Unlike sugary drinks and ultra-processed foods, bananas also provide fiber, vitamins and antioxidants, which slow down the absorption of sugar and offer several health benefits," he explains.

What happens to the brain when you eat bananas? Parade magazine also listened to neurologists and nutritionists to understand how consuming the fruit can benefit the brain.

According to nutritionist Laura M. Ali, the high fiber content of bananas plays an important role in this process.

"Although most people know that fiber contributes to digestion and intestinal health, many don't realize that it also promotes brain function," he says.

She explains that there is strong communication between the intestine and the brain.

"The connection between the gastrointestinal tract and the brain helps regulate mood, memory and concentration. Therefore, any food that is good for the intestine, like bananas, also tends to benefit the brain."

Another highlight is the fact that bananas are rich in prebiotics, compounds that promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the intestine. This helps reduce the formation of free radicals in neurons, reducing brain inflammation and promoting cognitive function.

"Bananas are rich in vitamin C and contain compounds responsible for their yellow color, which help reduce oxidation and inflammation in the brain. These antioxidants protect brain cells against damage. It's like a layer of paint that protects an iron handrail against rust", compares the expert.

Furthermore, two other nutrients present in bananas are also associated with brain health: vitamin B6 and magnesium.

"Bananas are an excellent source of vitamin B6, an essential nutrient for the production of neurotransmitters that regulate mood, memory and cognitive function", concludes Laura M. Ali.
