“U.S. Central Command forces have initiated a series of powerful strikes against Iran to impose heavy consequences on those who target innocent civilian-manned merchant ships in an international waterway,” the command said.
According to Centcom, the attacks were carried out in response to Iranian actions against three commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
“The aggression demonstrated by Iran was unjustified, dangerous and a clear violation of the ceasefire,” the US military body said.
The international press reported that explosions were heard in Sirik, a port city close to the Strait of Hormuz, in addition to booms on the island of Qeshm and Bandar Abbas. There were also reports of projectiles falling on Taheroui.
Iran accuses US of violating memorandum
Tension between the two countries had already been increasing after the United States reimposed sanctions on Iranian oil. Iran has stated that negotiations for a final agreement with Washington will not begin as long as US President Donald Trump maintains threats against the Islamic Republic.
According to Iran's Foreign Ministry, the suspension of the sanctions exemption represents a “clear violation” of the memorandum signed in June. In a statement cited by Al Jazeera, Tehran stated that the measure demonstrates “bad faith” and reinforces that the US administration cannot be trusted.
“The Iranian Foreign Ministry, while warning of the consequences of violating the agreement, will take all measures it deems necessary to protect its national interests,” the document says.
Maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz had resumed after the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran on June 17, with the aim of ending the conflict. Since then, the two countries have held two rounds of high-level talks.
By 2024, around 20 million barrels of crude oil flowed daily through the strait, a volume equivalent to almost 20% of global liquid oil consumption, according to the United States Energy Agency.
