United States and Iran exchange new wave of attacks
SÃO PAULO, SP (UOL/FOLHAPRESS) - The United States Command Center (Centcom) today announced the seventh wave of attacks by the North American country against Iran. Iranian attacks were also recorded against Kuwait,...
The United States has targeted Iran's infrastructure. Since the official resumption of attacks, bridges, airports, power plants and a train station have been hit.
Today, the Iranian news agency ISNA reported an attack in the city of Sirik, in the south of the country. According to the publication, the region was the target of an offensive attributed to the United States.
Iran has also carried out successive attacks against Kuwait, where the United States maintains military bases, as well as Bahrain and Qatar. The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a note condemning the Iranian offensives.
In Kuwait, Iranian attacks caused large fires. Today, the country's state news agency reported that the fire was under control and that no casualties were reported.
Earlier, the United Nations (UN) reported that Secretary-General António Guterres is "deeply concerned" about the military escalation between the two countries. The organization criticized, in particular, US attacks on Iranian civilian infrastructure.
The escalation of attacks has once again disrupted much of the traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, the world's main shipping route for oil and gas. The situation raised oil prices and renewed concerns about a possible knock-on effect on inflation.
Tehran has once again restricted navigation in the strait, while Washington has resumed the blockade of Iranian ports since Wednesday. Iran has signaled that it may encourage its Houthi allies in Yemen to close another strategic strait, Bab al-Mandeb, at the entrance to the Red Sea, according to sources interviewed by Reuters, if the United States increases attacks on Iranian infrastructure.
Last week, Iran attacked ships passing through a corridor in the strait. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said yesterday, during a press conference, that President Donald Trump will not "stand by" in the face of what he classified as acts of terrorism in the Strait of Hormuz and assured that Iran will suffer the consequences. She added, however, that the president remains open to a diplomatic solution.
