UN: Brazil remains off the Hunger Map and improves indicators

Brazil remains off the Hunger Map. According to a report from the United Nations, less than 2.5% of the population is malnourished, an indicator used to measure hunger. The information was released this Tuesday (21) by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO.

Improvements

The report also presented improvements in Brazil in several indicators, such as the reduction in severe food insecurity, with 0.6%, the lowest level in the historical series. Between 2021 and 2023, this number was 6.6% of the population. According to the data, 16 million Brazilians left moderate or severe food insecurity between 2023 and 2025.

Hunger in the world

In general, the UN agency indicates that hunger has decreased for the third consecutive year in the world. In 2025, 645 million people were living in a situation of malnutrition. Africa continues to have the largest number of people facing hunger, with 309 million.

The report indicates that the cost of adequate nutrition is the main obstacle to a healthy diet. The world average was US$4.28, around R$22 per person per day. In Brazil, this cost in 2025 was US$4.89, which is equivalent to around R$25 and is below the Latin American average. The comparison is made based on an analysis of the purchasing power of each location.

According to the FAO, one in five Brazilians did not have enough income to pay for a healthy diet, which indicates difficulties in regular access to adequate food and not necessarily a situation of hunger.
