Judge Lewis A. Kaplan ordered the release of the money that was deposited in an account controlled by the Court. The amount corresponds to compensation of US$5 million (R$25.8 million) defined by a jury in 2023, plus interest, according to AP (Associated Press).
The decision was made after the US Supreme Court rejected an appeal from Trump. The president's defense is still trying to reverse the case and asked for the payment to be postponed, but the judge authorized the release of the funds to Carroll, according to Reuters.
The case involves an accusation made by Carroll against Trump. The writer claims that she was sexually assaulted by him in 1996, at the luxury store Bergdorf Goodman, in New York. Trump denies the accusation.
The process is civil, not criminal. In 2023, a jury held Trump responsible for sexual abuse and defaming Carroll after she went public with the accusation, according to Reuters.
Trump also faces other damages in the case. In 2024, another jury ordered him to pay Carroll $83.3 million for defamation. This decision is still subject to appeal.
Carroll made the accusation against Trump public in 2019. The report was published in the memoir "What Do We Need Men For? A Modest Proposal", a free translation of "What Do We Need Men For? A Modest Proposal", released that year, according to the AP.
She said the episode occurred in a department store in New York. According to Carroll, the two met at Bergdorf Goodman in Manhattan in 1996 and entered a dressing room after a conversation about buying a gift.
Trump denies the accusation. The American president claims that the case never happened and says that Carroll invented the story.
