Trump threatens to cut "all trade relations" with Spain

The statement was given to journalists during an event with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on the sidelines of the Atlantic Alliance summit in Ankara, Turkey.

"They don't participate, they don't pay. I don't want to have anything to do with Spain. Cut all relations with Spain, please, including visits, ok?", said Trump, addressing US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

Trump said that when restrictions are imposed, Spain will “run back” to the United States. The president also said that he wants to end “any commercial relationship” with the country.

"They are a lost cause, they are bad people. Everyone is paying and working, but Spain is openly hostile. Let's see if they remain hostile when they call and say: 'Please, please, we want to trade with you, sir'. They make so much money with us, and we will make sure they start making much less," he said.

Last year, during the Hague summit, Trump had already threatened to cut trade relations with Spain after Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez refused to meet the target of allocating 5% of GDP to Defense.

After criticizing Spain, Trump spoke again about Greenland. He stated that the territory is a “big problem” and said the region is “very important for the United States” and “not important for Denmark”.

According to Trump, when Denmark was “run over by the Nazis in less than a day” during World War II, he asked the United States to “take care of Greenland.”

"And we kept Greenland and then, stupidly, we gave it back, because we are the ones who need Greenland. We need Greenland to protect the world, not just the United States," he declared. He added that he would never have returned the territory to Denmark.

“And I wouldn’t have returned the Panama Canal either,” he added.

Trump also said again that he is “very unhappy” with NATO because of the stance of countries such as France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom in the face of the war in Iran. According to him, these nations refused to give up military bases to the US Armed Forces.

"No one wanted to help, except for some smaller countries, because they are more vulnerable. That was the only reason they wanted to help," he said.

The president stated that he intends to expose his “problems” to the other leaders of the alliance, although he said that he likes the European heads of state and government.

"I think they didn't treat the United States well for many years, but that's okay. They are sensible, rational and good people, at least the majority," he said.
