The payment of US$5,625,005.48 was released to Carroll and his lawyers yesterday afternoon. The information appears in court documents cited by Forbes magazine.
The release occurred after Trump tried to postpone the payment again. According to Forbes, a federal judge rejected the US president's attempt to delay the transfer to the writer.
The money was deposited in an account controlled by the Court. Last week, Judge Lewis A. Kaplan had already authorized Carroll to receive the appeals, after the US Supreme Court declined to consider an appeal from Trump, Reuters found.
The amount corresponds to the compensation defined by a jury in 2023, plus interest. At that trial, Trump was held civilly liable for sexual abuse and defamation against Carroll. The process is civil, not criminal.
Trump denies the accusation. The American president claims that the case never happened and says that Carroll invented the story.
Carroll claims that she was sexually assaulted by Trump in 1996. According to the writer, the episode occurred at the luxury store Bergdorf Goodman, in Manhattan, New York, after the two entered a dressing room following a conversation about buying a gift.
The writer made the accusation public in 2019. The report was published in the memoir "What Do We Need Men For? A Modest Proposal", a free translation of "What Do We Need Men For? A Modest Proposal", released that year, according to AP (Associated Press).
The 2023 jury held Trump responsible for sexual abuse and defamation. The lawsuit addressed statements made by Trump in 2022, when he called Carroll's accusation a "hoax" and a "scam," Reuters reported at the time.
Trump also faces other damages in the case. In 2024, another jury ordered him to pay Carroll $83.3 million for defamation. This decision is still subject to appeal.
