"We have American companies ready to invest in Syria and help make your country greater and more prosperous than ever before," Trump added in the letter, which, according to a senior US government official, was delivered to Sharaa after the meeting between the two in Ankara, this Wednesday. Classifying a country as a sponsor of terrorism imposes restrictions on U.S. foreign assistance, defense product exports, and certain financial transactions. Last year, Trump signed an executive order ending a US sanctions program against Syria, allowing the country's isolation from the international financial system to end. Several Saudi companies plan billion-dollar investments as part of Riyadh's efforts to support Syria's recovery, while other Gulf countries have also pledged financial aid. The American president also praised Sharaa's actions against the extremist group Islamic State in the region. "He is respected by everyone, including me," Trump said.
