Trump attacks the electoral system and accuses China of interfering in 2020 in speech with conspiracy theories

Trump accused Beijing of what he called "the largest electoral data breach in history" and claimed that the country had illegally obtained information on around 220 million American voters. The Republican also asked the FBI to open an investigation into the case.

"The US is back and doing great, but we still have challenges that need to be resolved because no country can be right without fair elections," he said. Without presenting any evidence, he once again said that the American electoral system is vulnerable and that it can be "frauded and stolen". The president stated that his statements are supported by documents that were released on the White House website during the speech.

The page brings together files that, according to the White House, deal with "key areas of electoral integrity" in the US. The material is divided into four themes: alleged vulnerabilities in voting systems, exploitation of electoral data by China, an investigation into voter registrations in the state of Michigan and the presence of American "non-citizens" on electoral rolls.

In the section dedicated to voting systems, the government says it publishes documents that would reveal "a cyber threat aimed at the very core of American democracy." Neither the published texts nor Trump's speech, however, present evidence that votes were altered or manipulated in US elections.

In parallel, the material says that the 2020 presidential election in Venezuela was rigged. In the area dedicated to China, the government claims that the country illegally obtained information from millions of American voters.

The website calls the episode an "unprecedented nightmare for election security." The folder on the topic brings together 22 documents, including email exchanges and CIA reports containing sensitive information, as well as several excerpts and hidden names.

Trump said he intends to take measures to strengthen security for the midterm elections, scheduled for November. Without going into details, he said the federal government will help local authorities strengthen their electoral systems.

The promise, however, contrasts with recent actions by his own administration. In recent months, the government has gutted the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, a federal agency responsible for helping states protect their elections against cyberattacks and attempted interference.

The Trump administration also dismantled, in practice, the Electoral Assistance Commission, an independent and bipartisan body that acted as a federal arm to support the organization of elections - whose conduct is the responsibility of the states, as established by the American Constitution. The president fired the last three members of the commission, eliminating the body's operational capacity.

Trump took advantage of the statement to renew pressure on Congress in favor of approving the Save America Act. Among other measures, the project requires the presentation of an identification document to vote and proof of American citizenship for voter registration. Critics of the proposal say that restrictions of this type could make it difficult for minorities and other groups of voters to participate in the election.

According to the president, there would be no reason for parliamentarians to reject the proposal "unless they want to steal."

Trump stated that the disclosure of alleged irregularities is not intended to undermine confidence in the electoral system, but to strengthen it. According to him, the initiative seeks to "earn this trust by facing vulnerabilities and correcting them very, very quickly", something that, according to the president, his government would already be doing.

In yet another moment of conspiratorial tone, the Republican also said that the Chinese regime had tried to identify American journalists responsible for reports critical of his administration and that he had offered money to these professionals to publish even more negative content about him.

"They didn't care what was said," Trump said. The president, however, did not present evidence to support the accusations nor did he specify which journalists or media outlets would be involved.

"The Chinese government wanted the US president to lose the next election. And the reason they wanted me to lose was because they knew I knew their methods, imposed billions and billions of dollars in tariffs against them, and built the strongest military in the world," he said.

Trump threatened media outlets that chose not to broadcast the speech live. According to Reuters, networks such as CNN, NBC and ABC did not show the statement on their main platforms. During his speech, the Republican stated that the stations that refused to broadcast his speech should have their licenses revoked.

The president also revisited frequent topics on his political agenda and criticized policies related to the trans population and immigration. Trump further stated that, before his return to the White House, the US was the butt of jokes.

"We had the worst border in the history of the world and now we have the best," he said, referring to his government's migration policies. Also without presenting evidence, he said that no irregular immigrants had entered the country in recent months.
