The Opta supercomputer, a platform specialized in statistics and sports data analysis, had a high accuracy rate in predictions for the second phase of the 2026 World Cup. According to simulations carried out by the tool, 14 of the 16 classified in the round of 16 were correctly selected before the clashes.

The only results that escaped the projections involved two traditional European teams. In Opta's estimates, Germany appeared as the overwhelming favorite against Paraguay, while the Netherlands were more likely to eliminate Morocco. However, the predictions were not confirmed, and both ended up being eliminated from the competition.

To arrive at the predictions, the system carried out around 10 thousand simulations considering different scenarios for each confrontation. The same platform had previously attracted attention by indicating Paris Saint-Germain as favorites for the Champions League title, giving the club a 56% chance of winning the tournament. The prediction ended up being confirmed.

At the start of the 2026 World Cup, Opta pointed to Spain as the main candidate for the title. As the competition progressed, however, the scenario changed. France and Argentina moved to the top of the favoritism ranking, driven by their performance on the field and, in the case of the Argentine team, also by the presence of Lionel Messi, the top scorer in the history of the tournament.

Other studies also presented different projections for the World Cup. The School of Applied Mathematics at Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), for example, attributed a 15.57% chance of winning the title to Spain and just 4.68% to the team led by Neymar.

Another Brazilian projection, known as "Seer of Cups", differs from previous calculations. According to this survey, Cristiano Ronaldo's team is the main favorite to win the title, while Spain appears as runner-up. The study also predicts that the Brazilian team will be eliminated before the semifinals.
