A 40-year-old man died after being attacked by a giant python while walking along a trail in a forested area in the Jalan Lalnana region, in the North Maluku Islands, Indonesia. According to the information released, Hasim had spent part of the night in a bar located in the rural area of the region. At around 3am, he was returning home on foot along a trail surrounded by vegetation when he was attacked by the snake, which came out of the forest and immobilized him.
According to the version presented by local residents, the man was unable to escape. The python coiled around his body and crushed him before swallowing him. When Hasim did not return home, family members began searching along the route he used to take.
During the search, carried out on the afternoon of the same Monday, relatives found signs that indicated that something serious had happened. On the way, there were bloodstains and several objects belonging to the victim, including a backpack, a rechargeable flashlight, a crossbody bag and a pair of sandals.
"The searches led family members to find blood on the floor and the victim's belongings," said the police chief of the Sula Islands, in a statement published by the British newspaper The Sun.
Shortly afterwards, residents spotted a huge python hiding under a bamboo grove close to the trail. The animal drew attention because its abdomen was extremely enlarged, which raised suspicions that it could have attacked Hasim.
After capturing the snake, residents removed the victim's body from inside the animal, ending the mystery surrounding the man's disappearance.
According to the information released, the region where the attack occurred is surrounded by an extensive area of forest and small subsistence agricultural properties. This type of environment is considered a natural habitat for large snakes, such as pythons.
The case drew attention due to the rarity and circumstances of the death. The trail used by Hasim crosses an area of ??dense vegetation, where these reptiles find favorable conditions to live and hide, making encounters with animals of this size a possibility in forest regions such as the North Maluku Islands.
