The child who died was identified as José Heitor Dias Cerqueira, 5. Another child of the same age and a 15-year-old teenager were also shot.
Paraty City Hall reported that the girl remains in serious condition and was transferred to a more complex hospital unit, which has not yet been announced. The teenager is in stable health.
According to witnesses, the crime occurred around 7:20 pm, when three hooded men shot in a square in the region, where children were playing. Residents reported that the place was busy after watching the Brazil game on a television that neighbors placed in the square.
Security camera footage recorded the suspects' escape. The recordings show men running down a street and quickly getting into a vehicle, which leaves the scene shortly afterwards.
Preliminary police investigations indicate that the attack was carried out by members of the TCP (Third Pure Command), in an attempt to invade the region controlled by the CV (Red Command).
According to the Military Police, police officers from the 2nd Independent Military Police Company were called after the victims were admitted to the Hugo Miranda Municipal Hospital with injuries caused by gunshots. After the attack, the PM reinforced policing in the region.
The investigation is in charge of the 167th DP (Paraty). According to the Civil Police, the investigation was carried out at the scene and other measures are underway to clarify how the attack happened and identify those responsible.
During the investigation, two ammunition cases were collected, calibers 9 mm and .380, which will be analyzed.
The body of José Heitor Dias Cerqueira was sent to the IML (Medical-Legal Institute) in Angra dos Reis, also on Costa Verde.
In a statement, Paraty City Hall stated that it mobilized teams from the health and social assistance areas to provide care to victims and support to families. The municipal administration also informed that it maintains contact with the State security forces and requested priority in investigating the case.
