At 51, Fujimori won the second round by a narrow margin against leftist candidate Roberto Sánchez. She will assume the Presidency on July 28, replacing the current interim head of state, José Maria Balcázar, and will have a mandate until 2031.
The leader of the Fuerza Popular party will be the ninth person to hold the position since 2016. In recent years, Peru has faced successive political crises, with presidents removed by Congress or forced to resign under the threat of impeachment.
"Thinking differently does not make us enemies. National reconciliation does not mean forgetting differences, but learning to build on what unites us", said Fujimori at the National Theater of Lima.
The president-elect also declared that no government will be able to move the country forward as long as political division continues to be fueled. She called on parties, public institutions, professional entities and universities to collaborate with the new management.
The victory represents Fujimori's return to power more than two decades after the fall of Alberto Fujimori, father of the elected president, who governed Peru between 1990 and 2000. The former president's trajectory remains one of the main divisions in Peruvian society.
Defeated in the election, Roberto Sánchez ruled out any possibility of reconciliation. The politician accused the parliamentary group linked to Fujimori and other forces in Congress of protecting former president Dina Boluarte from accusations related to the deaths of dozens of protesters during her government, between 2022 and 2025.
"How could we go and kiss your hand? The first thing Mrs. Fujimori should do is kneel down and ask for forgiveness," Sánchez said in front of supporters gathered at her party's headquarters in Lima.
In the assessment of political scientist Eduardo Dargent, Fujimori will have two immediate challenges: building conditions for governance without a majority in Congress and fulfilling his promise to confront the rise of crime.
Insecurity and the activities of criminal organizations were among voters' biggest concerns. In 2025, Peru registered around 26,500 reports of extortion, a number nine times higher than that recorded five years earlier.
