The action on Vagner de Araújo Street was carried out by PMs from Caep (Special Police Actions Company) Southeast, responsible for covering the east and south zones of the capital of São Paulo. The victim, José Carlos da Rocha Sobrinho, 42, was an evangelical pastor of a church in the region.
The death caused outrage. This Monday and Tuesday (14), protests were recorded, with roads closed. Residents set fire to garbage bags and crossed dumpsters on streets in the neighborhood. The Fire Department controlled the fires and the PM unblocked the avenues. An uncle of the victim ended up being detained by the police.
In a statement, the SSP (Public Security Secretariat), managed by Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), said that the protocol for using recording equipment will be investigated.
According to the police, they were carrying out routine patrols when they suspected a Volkswagen Fox. They gave orders to stop, which the driver did not obey. The driver of the vehicle paired the police car with Fox, and the only man in the vehicle allegedly pointed a gun at the officers, who reacted.
The police fired rifle and pistol shots. The person shot was taken to Sapopemba Hospital, where he died. He had injuries to his neck, the back of his head and his right thigh.
According to the police report, Sobrinho had experience with the police and was a member of a criminal faction.
Investigators were at the scene and found gunshot marks on the driver's door and the passenger's door glass. The police presented a .380 caliber Glock pistol at the police station, which, according to them, belonged to Sobrinho.
The three police officers who shot were notified to become a defense and later give a statement. The Volkswagen Fox did not appear in criminal complaints.
The case is investigated by the DHPP (Department of Homicide and Personal Protection). The Internal Affairs Department says it is monitoring the investigation.
