Japanese authorities have mounted an operation to capture a bear suspected of breaking into at least 15 homes in Shizukuishi, Iwate Prefecture, over the past two weeks.

The most recent case occurred on Monday, when the animal entered the home of an elderly couple and ransacked the kitchen in search of food. Mitsuo Matsubara, 87, said he heard noises in the room and found an Asian black bear in front of the open refrigerator, with food scattered on the floor.

The sequence of invasions led authorities to install traps, electric fences and reinforce patrols in the region. Residents also began to receive alerts about the presence of the animal.

According to Shiho Chida, a bear specialist in the environmental sector of Iwate Prefecture, the repetition of attacks in the same location is unusual and may indicate that only one animal is behind the episodes.

"It is rare for a bear to repeatedly invade the same area. As it may be the same individual, we want to capture it as quickly as possible," he told The Guardian newspaper.

On a rural property, a bear entered buildings containing milk-based food four times. On another occasion, cameras recorded the animal trying to open the sliding door of a house in the early hours of the morning. The farmer managed to scare him away with a flashlight and shouting.

After the episode, he began spreading a homemade mixture with Japanese mustard near the entrances in an attempt to ward off the animal.

On Friday, another resident returned from shopping to find a bear inside the house, near the bedroom where his elderly father was sleeping. The animal fled when the man knocked on a door, but tried to return soon after.

According to the report, he had to hold a sliding door for around 30 seconds while the bear, standing on its hind legs, tried to force entry.

The next night, a woman found another bear looking for food in the kitchen. On Sunday, the animal broke into a Japanese bakery and took donuts from the refrigerator.

Authorities also recorded five break-ins at the same residence, where the bear allegedly ate cookies, sugar and karinto, a Japanese sweet made with fried dough and sugary topping.
