According to authorities, the 32-year-old woman presented herself at a police station and confessed to the crime. After the report, police officers went to the apartment where she lived and found the child dead.
Initially, the police reported that the boy had serious injuries to one of his arms and that they were investigating the possibility of cannibalism. The suspicion was later reinforced by the mother herself, who admitted to having cooked parts of her son's body.
Tests were carried out on samples of the woman's saliva, blood and nails to verify the statements she made. For legal reasons, the identities of the mother and child have not been released.
The case also raised questions about the performance of child protection services. Mother and son had already been the subject of several complaints to the New South Wales Department of Communities and Justice.
According to the British press, neighbors had reported worrying situations involving the woman and child. Among the records were a history of violence and drug abuse. The suspect's mother herself had already requested a court order against her.
Kate Washington, New South Wales Minister for Communities and Families, said the department responsible for child protection had received several reports involving the child before the crime. According to The Guardian, the last complaint related to the family was made 18 months ago.
"Today, many people in New South Wales wonder how this happened and whether more could have been done to protect this child. We want to understand whether there was anything we could have done differently to offer more protection," said the minister.
The woman appeared in court on Sunday and did not request release on bail. She is due back in Wyong Local Court on September 1.
