"The Brazilian government repudiates the intervention of Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in a public hearing held, this Tuesday (7), by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), open to the participation of the private sector and civil society to discuss the imposition of tariffs against Brazil", says the note from the Brazilian government.
The government's statement classifies the American investigation as unfair and criticizes the fact that Flávio cited the Master case scandal to the USA without mentioning his involvement with the bank's owner, Daniel Vorcaro.
"When citing the Master case, the biggest corruption scheme in the country's history, he omitted its origins linked to the government of Jair Bolsonaro. He also forgot to mention his own links with Daniel Vorcaro, from whom he asked for more than R$130 million to, as he claims, produce a film about his father", says an excerpt.
Flávio had stated that the adoption of a tariff on Brazilian products would benefit Lula in this year's electoral dispute and that now would be "the worst time" to implement it. The senator's suggestion was that the discussion around tariffs should be postponed until after the Brazilian elections to avoid political use.
The Brazilian government's text also says that among the 34 registered Brazilians, only Flávio did not take a position against the measures against Brazil, choosing to suggest their postponement "with a clear electoral objective".
"Instead of refuting the unfounded allegations of the North American government to tax Brazil, the senator chose to legitimize the results of an unfair investigation against businesspeople and workers in our country", says the note.
To the USA, Flávio justified his participation because he is a Brazilian parliamentarian and a prominent member of the opposition.
Publicly, he criticized the absence of Brazilian government representatives at the event and presented himself as someone interested in defending national interests. Within Planalto, the assessment is that Brazil should not send official representatives so as not to legitimize the American investigation, which the Lula government opposes.
The USTR has been investigating Brazil for alleged unfair practices under Section 301 since July last year.
On June 1st, the office announced the conclusion of the investigation that analyzed different topics related to the country, including payment systems, such as Pix, illegal deforestation, big techs and corruption, and suggested a new tariff of 25% against Brazilian products.
After the results of Section 301 are announced, hearings take place in Washington so that entities interested in the case can take a position on the case.
