Iran's Revolutionary Guard launched several ballistic missiles against a United States military base in Jordan this Tuesday (28), ending the period of reduced clashes in the Middle East. According to the American Central Command, all projectiles were intercepted and no casualties were reported.

The attack occurred at 5:45 pm Eastern Time, 6:45 pm Brasília, and was classified by CentCom as an attempted surprise offensive against American troops in the region.

"Islamic Revolutionary Guard Forces launched multiple ballistic missiles from Iran in an attempted surprise attack against US forces based in the Middle East. All Iranian missiles were successfully intercepted. US forces remain vigilant and in a high state of readiness," the command said.

Hours later, US and Saudi fighter jets struck weapons depots and logistics facilities used by Iranian-backed groups in eastern Iraq. American officials stated that this operation was not related to the launch of missiles against the base in Jordan.

According to CentCom, the bombings were a response to more than 30 drone strikes commanded by the Revolutionary Guard in the previous 72 hours. The Iraqi Popular Mobilization Authority reported that there were deaths and injuries in the actions, but did not initially release a definitive report.

Saudi Arabia confirmed its participation in the offensive and declared that it does not intend to expand the conflict, but will react to aggression against its territory. The country had announced the interception of drones launched from Iraq against oil installations in the eastern region of the kingdom. Iraqi groups, however, denied involvement in these attacks.

The new escalation occurred after a few days without offensives announced between Washington and Tehran. The suspension of American attacks had been influenced by the progress of diplomatic negotiations and recommendations from military commanders, who also warned of a reduction in stocks of air defense interceptors.

The availability of missiles used by the Patriot and Thaad systems has become a cause for concern among parliamentarians and experts in the United States. The Pentagon, however, stated that it maintains the necessary resources to comply with President Donald Trump's orders.

On July 18, another Iranian attack on a US base in Jordan killed two US soldiers and injured others. The offensive led Washington to intensify bombings against Iranian targets for 13 consecutive nights.

Trump denied that the country faces an ammunition shortage. Asked about stocks, the president stated that the United States has sufficient weapons and is working to replace the material previously sent to Ukraine.
