I don't call my mother mother and I have difficulty hugging her, says MC Carol

And she has been trying hard to respond. Carol discovered that acting in a soap opera requires much more than memorizing lines. Accustomed to the freedom to improvise in the series "Impuros" (Disney+), the funk artist states that she had to learn to follow strict camera markings and memorize her body movements during the scenes.

A lover of soap operas, she thought she would only play a small part and ended up surprised to discover that she would play Mirtes, a fixed character in the plot who raised her nephew Camilo while the boy's mother was in prison.

Despite the busy schedule, Carol states that she managed to balance recording the soap opera with her show schedule and guarantees that she does not intend to give up either career.

Satisfied with the new phase in her performance, the singer says that what is still missing is recognition in music. According to her, male artists still receive higher fees than women, even when they are less successful. Read the interview below.*

QUESTION - You are acting alongside big names in Brazilian television drama. What was it like arriving in this already established cast? MC CAROL - It's sinister, I didn't imagine! My core has people who are very supportive. I arrive on set and they ask if I want to do the scene, if I want to study the lines, and that's really cool. I don't know if other older people would have this patience, you know? Having this care with those who are new, with those who are just arriving, is really cool.

P - How did it all start? MC - When I took classes here [at Projac], I imagined that maybe participation could happen inside the prison, something minor. When talks about me being in a soap opera started, the first thought was this, that it would just be a participation. Then came the news that it would be Mirtes and that the work would run from May 2026 until January 2027.

P - You had already acted in other series, but debuting in a nine o'clock soap opera has another weight. What was the biggest challenge? MC - I think it's memorizing text. In 'Impuros' (Disney+) the director lets us create, improvise. You feel more comfortable. In the soap opera, everyone is very nice, they treat me with affection, but you need to follow the text. Furthermore, when you arrive on set, the director does a camera rehearsal, marks the positions and you even have to memorize the gestures you will make with your body. You can't do whatever you want during the scene, everything has to be planned. The biggest difficulty is remembering what you have to do with your body along with the lines.

Q - Mirtes raises her nephew who was raised away from his mother. You've already said that you're not close to your biological mother and were raised by your great-grandparents. Did your experience help you build the character? MC - No, because I do something else there, but I understand Camilo and this relationship he has with his mother because I was that person. I still have this difficulty to hug her, to say that I love her, to call her mother. I don't call my mother mother, I call her Patrícia. So I understand Camilo's revolt. We don't know what he heard, what they said to him. He knows he didn't have a mother there.

Q - On the networks, viewers are speculating that Mirtes may try to take Camilo away from his mother. Do you think this turnaround can happen? MC - I don't know what will happen, but I don't believe that Mirtes is a bad person, or a villain. I think she is a human being, a person who raised a child that is not hers. Maybe she even canceled herself for it. I don't know, I don't know if she can't have children, for example. The soap opera runs until January, so a lot of water will flow. Maybe she's jealous, but for now what I'm seeing is one person trying to help another.

Q - Do you have any dreams about your acting career? Any role that you really want to do? MC - I haven't thought about it yet, I'm just starting and for now, I'm satisfied. Mirtes' arrival was really cool because it's a side that people don't know about. A lot of people didn't even recognize me, they didn't know it was MC Carol there. I'm doing what I wanted, you know? Maybe next year I'll have other ideas, I'll say I want to become a doctor, or something like that, but today I'm satisfied.

Q - And in your musical career, is there still something that remains to be explored? MC - I like participating in various festivals. I have already traveled to several countries because of music. I went to the United States three times, every year I go to Europe to sing. I just wanted to be more valued.

Q - Financially? MC - Yes. Men are valued more than women. At a festival where a man receives a fee of R$150,000, R$200,000, R$300,000, a woman receives no more than R$20,000. Even if the guy has less name than the woman, he will earn more, and it's like that in all professions. In the end, that's what I hope, not only about music, but I want more appreciation and financial equality for women.

Q - Who are your inspirations in the world of music? MC - Since I started singing, I have had Tati Quebra Barraco as an inspiration, because of the style I sing. She also has this vibe of a black woman from the favela, angry, who uses men, who makes things happen. But I'm a fan of several women, such as Elza Soares and Alcione, but one inspiration is Tati.

Q - And in acting? MC - Several! Several black actresses that I am inspired by. I love Tais Araújo, Erika Januza, Jennifer [Nascimento] herself, who I work with, she's really cool. We had a singing scene and she instructed me, because she is also a singer and I don't know how to sing, I'm an MC, I scream. Oh, and I'm a big fan of Marjorie Estiano too.
