A heat bubble will advance through Central South America this week and cause temperatures well above the average for July in areas of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. The phenomenon is expected to affect nine Brazilian states, mainly in the South and Central-West regions, but will also have repercussions in the North and Southeast.

The hot air mass will have its core over Paraguay, where temperatures may exceed 35°C in some locations. According to MetSul, the combination of intense heat, North wind and low humidity increases the risk of fires in vegetation in the neighboring country.

In Brazil, the phenomenon will be more evident in the South Region. Rio Grande do Sul, which recorded negative temperatures at the beginning of the week after the passage of a mass of cold air, is expected to face a rapid change in the weather pattern. From Friday onwards, the State is expected to record highs close to or above 30°C in several cities in Rio Grande do Sul, with some points reaching 33°C, values ??more than 10°C above what was expected for the period.

The rise in temperatures is related to the strengthening of the Low Level Jet (JBN), a low-altitude wind current that transports hot air from tropical regions to the south of the continent. According to MetSul, this wind corridor will be responsible for carrying a large amount of hot air from Bolivia and the Midwest to the Southern States.

Which states will be affected?

In Paraná and Santa Catarina, the action of an atmospheric block should prevent the advancement of instabilities and maintain a sequence of sunny and dry days. Climatempo explains that the combination between the blockage and the strengthening of the JBN favors a summer period, characterized by several consecutive days of temperatures above normal during winter.

In the Midwest, the heat should be even more intense and persistent. According to information from MetSul, Mato Grosso do Sul and Mato Grosso will be the states most affected by the heat bubble, with temperatures close to or above 35°C and the possibility of maximum temperatures between 36°C and 38°C in some areas. The heat should also advance to Goiás, in addition to areas of Rondônia and Tocantins.

In São Paulo, the impact will be smaller, but the State will also have above-average temperatures. The interior of São Paulo is expected to record the highest elevations, with maximums between 32°C and 34°C in some cities next week. In the capital, the proximity to the coast should reduce the warming effect, but some afternoons may have temperatures around or above 30°C.

Despite the warm afternoons, the mornings should still remain cold in higher altitude areas in the South, maintaining a large thermal range, a common characteristic of winter in the region.
