Fujimori had 9,223,396 votes, or 50.135%, against 9,173,755 votes for his competitor, left-wing deputy Roberto Sánchez, or 49.865% of the votes. "We are aware that Peru is divided, that it is practically split in half," Fujimori said in front of reporters in Lima. ??The vote took place on June 7th. The counting of votes took weeks and showed a scenario of strong polarization in the country, with only 49,641 votes separating the two candidates. Sánchez, Keiko's opponent in the second round, indicated that he would not accept the results and said he would protest at the International Court of Human Rights. He alleges alleged administrative irregularities and problems in the management of voting ballots by the electoral body in the election held abroad. Change in the political map of South America With Fujimori's victory, another South American country presents a change in its politics after local elections. The right has superiority in relation to left-wing governments: there are eight presidents among the 12 countries in the region (see the map below). The map underwent changes with the recent elections in Colombia, Chile and Bolivia, in which right-wing politicians emerged victorious: Abelardo de la Espriella in Colombia, in June 2026; José Antônio Kast in Chile, in December 2025; Rodrigo Paz in Bolivia, in October 2025. Historically, political forces in the region alternate periods of dominance. Although the left prevailed on the continent at the beginning of the 21st century, with the so-called "pink wave", the right has regained ground in recent years.
