"We must consider progressive and gradual access for different age groups" to social networks and other online platforms, declared Ursula von der Leyen, speaking to the press after receiving a report from experts on the measures that the EU can adopt to protect children on the internet.
"Just as we don't give our children the car keys before they have a driver's license, or we don't allow them to buy alcohol until they are of legal age to do so, we must also establish the age at which children can legally access social media," said Von der Leyen.
The Commission will present, after the summer, concrete proposals after studying the experts' report. The leader of the European executive also said that access to screens should be allowed up to 13 years old under adult supervision and for a limited time.
From the age of 13, access to social networks will be gradually expanded, but the age of users must be proven by the platforms.
