WASHINGTON, USA (FOLHAPRESS) - During a Senate hearing this Thursday (16), Democratic senator Tim Kaine criticized the new tariff against Brazil and recalled the tariffs imposed in the past. He participates in the hearing of President Donald Trump's nominee to serve as ambassador to Brazil, Congressman Daniel Peréz.

When questioned, Kaine recalled that, after the US announcement, Brazil responded that it intended to retaliate against the sanction. "If Brazil retaliates with a 25% tariff, who loses more? USA or Brazil?". The nominee then responded that the tariffs were implemented on Wednesday night and that he would need to find out more about the matter before giving his opinion.

In response to Peréz's response, the senator said that, if the United States has a trade surplus with Brazil, "this means that we sell more to Brazil than we buy from it."

"If we impose a 25% tariff on them and then they impose an equivalent tariff on us, it's not the same thing. We won't just see inflation increase," said the senator, who considers that if the Brazilian government applies tariffs to United States manufactured products sold to the Brazilian market this "will harm the very American companies that do business in Brazil."

After the hearing, Daniel Peréz stated in an interview with journalists that the US surplus with Brazil "is a fact". "We actually have a trade surplus with Brazil. The 25% tariffs were implemented yesterday by the USTR. I have not yet been informed of the details of this decision," he said.

Peréz said he has not yet had access to the case briefing, but that, in the coming weeks, he will "learn more about the matter and, at the appropriate time, I will have the right conversations with the appropriate people."
