Copa do Brasil breaks round record with 4 goalless games

WHAT HAPPENED

It is the first time in history that four first legs of the round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil end without goals. Vasco x Fluminense, Atlético-MG x Juventude and Santos x Remo, on Saturday (1st), in addition to Chapecoense x Cruzeiro, on Sunday (2nd), are responsible for the feat.

The previous record was three scores scored at this stage, in the 1992 and 2019 editions. The most recent of these, won by Athletico-PR, recorded just nine goals scored in the round of 16, the lowest mark in the competition in the 21st century.

It took 318 minutes of the ball rolling until the first goal of the round was scored. Maurício, from Palmeiras, ended the solitude of the net by scoring three minutes into the second half, in the Alviverde team's victory against Fortaleza, 3-0, at 4pm this Sunday. Previously, the three games played on Saturday ended zero.

So far, this year's round of 16 is also the one with the fewest goals in history, with seven. In addition to Palmeiras 3x0 Fortaleza, the nets swung at Mirassol 1x1 Grêmio and Internacional 2x0 Corinthians. In 1990, in the second edition of the tournament, only eight goals were scored at this stage.

The round ends this Monday with Athletico-PR x Vitória, at Arena da Baixada. The clash could extend the negative record and become the fifth 0-0 of the round. On the other hand, if you have at least two balls in the net, you will save the current edition of the Copa do Brasil from yet another abominable statistic.
