Civil police officer is killed in a shooting attack on Avenida Brasil, in RJ

Carlos Alberto Freire Neto, 35, who worked at the DHBF (Baixada Fluminense Homicide Police Station) was in a police vehicle, accompanied by other agents, when the car was hit by gunfire. Neto was shot in the head and was taken to the Albert Schweitzer municipal hospital, in Realengo, but he did not resist.

In the same attack, a civil police officer was shot in the leg. She was taken to the same health unit and the condition is stable.

The case happened near the community of Muquiço, in Guadalupe, north of the city. The area is controlled by the TCP (Third Pure Command).

The Civil Police released a note of condolence and classified the case as a “cowardly attack by criminals”. The police officer had been with the company since December 2023. He leaves behind a wife and two children.

The report found that the police were working at a crime scene and were hit by gunfire as the vehicle left the scene.

Criminal agents were passing through the region at the time and exchanged gunfire with suspects.

After the attack, the Civil Police carried out an operation in Muquiço, using helicopters, to find the perpetrators of the shooting. The action involved all teams from specialized police departments in the capital and Baixada Fluminense, as well as agents from Core (Special Resources Coordination), the institution's elite division.

The Military Police said it intensified policing with teams from the expressway battalion.

"Attacks against public security agents represent a direct attack on the State and will continue to act firmly and permanently in the fight against factions and in the repression of criminals", said Civil in a statement.

Due to the operation, two municipal schools in the region activated a safe access protocol and ordered students to remain within the unit. The shooting happened at the time students were leaving for the morning shift.

According to the government, Carlos Alberto has been a member of the Civil Police since 2023.

Ricardo Couto de Castro, acting governor of Rio de Janeiro, released a note of condolence over the death. "The State Government will closely monitor the investigations so that those responsible for this crime are identified, arrested and held accountable with the utmost rigor of the law. Attacks against security agents are unacceptable and will receive a firm response from the institutions", he declared.
