The Best Scientists by Discipline 2026 survey, from the Research.com platform, highlighted professionals from the São Paulo institute. For the second year in a row, researchers appear on the list that measures productivity and global academic influence.
The classification uses the H index to evaluate the impact of publications. This indicator calculates the scientist's relevance based on the number of articles published and the number of times they were cited by other works.
The Butantan group includes the board of directors and retired scientists. Among the winners are director Esper Kallás, vice-director Rui Curi, researchers Ana Maria Moura-da-Silva, Sergio Verjovski Almeida and Vanderson Rocha, as well as retirees Darci Moraes Barros-Battesti and Antonio Carlos Martins Camargo.
WHO ARE THE AWARD-WINNING SCIENTISTS
Deputy director Rui Curi and researcher Ana Maria Moura-da-Silva lead the group's Brazilian positions. Curi ranks 3rd nationally in biology and biochemistry for her studies in cellular metabolism, while Ana Maria is 5th in molecular biology, researching snake venoms.
Director Esper Kallás and other experts also stand out in the national ranking. Kallás ranked 13th in immunology for research on HIV and vaccines, and Sergio Verjovski Almeida reached 8th place in molecular biology.
The Brazilian list also includes specialists in oncology and parasitology. Vanderson Rocha, pioneer in cell therapy against cancer, is 17th in medicine; Darci Barros-Battesti is 50th in animal science; and Antonio Carlos Camargo ranks 109th in biology and biochemistry.
