Brazilian government calls ambassador to Argentina for consultations after Milei attacks

The government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) called the Brazilian ambassador to Argentina, Júlio Bitelli, for consultations following the attacks made by the Argentine president, Javier Milei, on the Brazilian president himself and on minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), last Saturday, 25.

Information about the call was confirmed to Broadcast Politico by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs this Sunday. Bitelli should return to Brazil this Sunday, the 26th, or Monday, the 27th, and meet with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira.

The call for consultations, in diplomacy, is a way for a country to protest against the actions of another state. This is what happened, for example, in February 2024, when Brazil's ambassador to Israel, Frederico Meyer, was called in, after Lula was declared "persona non grata" by Benjamin Netanyahu's government. This was also what happened in October 2024, when the Venezuelan government of Nicolás Maduro decided to call the ambassador to Brazil for consultations following Brazil's veto on Venezuela's entry into the Brics.

In practice, there is no deadline for the return of Brazil's ambassador to Argentina to the neighboring country. The act of calling him back to Brazil for meetings serves more as a diplomatic message of strong discontent.

The Argentine president, Javier Milei, during the PL convention, in São Paulo, on Saturday, 25, called Lula a "prisoner" and Moraes "bald trash". He complained about the fact that he was not allowed to visit former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and compared it to the period when Lula was in prison. He also said he trusted Flávio Bolsonaro (PL) to "manage to stop the socialist scum".
