Baby born weighing more than 6 kg and surprises medical team

Yemayá India Soto Rodriguez came into the world on June 9, one day after her due date. The mother, Dorisha Rodriguez, said that she was already expecting a big baby, but did not imagine that the estimate made in the ultrasound was so close to reality.

"At the last growth ultrasound, they said she would weigh about 14 pounds. So I knew she would be big. I thought they had exaggerated, but we were completely wrong," Dorisha told WGRZ.

According to the parents, hospital professionals stated that Yemayá is among the largest babies ever born in that unit.

Her father, Dominic Soto, was also surprised by his daughter's size before she was even born. He said that, during the 2D ultrasound, it was possible to clearly see several of the girl's features.

"I was very excited to have such a big and beautiful baby. She was so big that you could see everything, from her hair to her nose," he said.

The birth also had a curious detail. According to Dorisha, the baby changed position before the cesarean section and was born with one hand in front.

"She went from being in a perfect position to having her hand above her head and holding the healthcare professional's finger. It is documented that during the cesarean section, she was born with her hand in front. She was ready to come out," he said.

Despite being healthy, Yemayá had to spend a short period in the neonatal ICU to monitor his breathing.

The girl's name was also chosen with special meaning. Dorisha explained that she and her partner wanted to honor feminine strength, wisdom and unconditional love.

"Yemayá has its origins in the Yoruba tradition and is known as the Mother of All Living Beings. For me, the name represents strength, love, protection, abundance and resilience," he told Today.

The parents had received clothes for newborns and 0 to 3 months, but Yemayá already uses clothes for 3 to 6 months and size 2 diapers.

Dorisha said she is going to donate the clothes that no longer fit to a friend who had a premature baby.

“It won’t go to waste, but it certainly won’t be used at Yemayá”, he joked.

Mother is suspected of burning her son's hands with a hot spoon as punishment
