Avalanche leaves two dead and eight missing on Broad Peak

The deaths were confirmed by the Pakistan Alpine Club in the early hours of this Friday (31/7). The victims are Omani climber Nadhira Al Harthy and Nepalese Pur Bahadur Gurung, known as “Yukta”. Nadhira's body has already been removed from the mountain.

At 8,047 meters high, Broad Peak ranks 12th among the highest mountains in the world. The team hit by the avalanche brought together six Nepali mountaineers, a Pakistani, an Omani, an American and a Chinese.

The group was led by Nirmal Purja, known as Nims Dai, one of the best-known names in international mountaineering. The climb was part of the Nepalese's personal project of reaching, for the third time, the 14 peaks on the planet over 8,000 meters.

Nims Dai was also trying to become the first person to complete the 14 mountain climb twice without the use of supplemental oxygen.

In a statement, the Pakistan Alpine Club said it was monitoring the operations and maintaining contact with the authorities and teams involved in the rescue.

"The Pakistan Alpine Club is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating actions with all parties involved. The Club hopes for the safety and successful rescue of all climbers and expresses its solidarity with the families and the international mountaineering community at this difficult time," the organization stated.
