The building, formerly the headquarters of Pfizer, has 37 floors and is located between Second and Third Avenues, in downtown Manhattan. According to the New York Fire Department, teams were called after reports of failures in the structure.
At the scene, firefighters found that support columns were giving way and that there was continuous movement in the structure. Representatives from the Department of Infrastructure and Civil Protection also attended the event.
As a precaution, the building was evacuated during the morning rush hour. Eight other nearby buildings were also evacuated, according to the New York Post.
“The concern is that since we arrived at the site early in the morning, we have observed continuous movements in the structure,” said Mayor Zohran Mamdani

The New York Fire Department's chief of operations, John Esposito, explained that, due to the way the building was constructed, with a steel structure, the risk would not be of a total collapse, but of a localized collapse.
Authorities closed the movement of pedestrians and vehicles between 40th and 45th streets, from First to Third Avenues, due to the risk of falling debris.
“It’s a minute-by-minute assessment,” said Mamdani, asking residents to avoid the area.
The building is undergoing one of the largest commercial-to-residential property conversion projects in the United States. The project is expected to generate around 1,600 apartments by 2027
