Storm destroys roofs and fences of sanctuary with 300 animals rescued in RS The Voz Animal Sanctuary, which houses around 300 animals in Eldorado do Sul, in the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre, was hit by a storm with hail and strong winds over the weekend. The storm caused roof damage, fallen trees and damage to the fences of the shelter, which welcomes dogs rescued from abuse. The site had already faced other recent difficulties. In 2025, part of the structure was destroyed by fire. The Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) also worked to rescue and shelter animals during the 2024 floods. ? Access the g1 RS channel on WhatsApp The founder of the NGO, Fernanda Ellwanger de Lima, reported the impact of the storm. "We had the blow last year, now this year. We were involved in the floods of 2024. So, we really need people's help so that we can continue with our doors open, continue to be a home for these beings who have already suffered so much, right?", he stated. The force of the wind knocked trees over fences and roofs. According to the founder, the animals panicked during the rain. "There are people who stayed overnight, but weren't able to do much at the time of the hail. And they were really, really scared," he said. Emergency repairs were carried out in the most critical locations, with the purchase of materials and the opening of clearings where trees had fallen. "We had to redo the roof of the warehouse, some spaces, some kennels, as an emergency, but the site as a whole needs to be rebuilt", explained the founder. Despite urgent measures, the NGO still needs to replace lost materials. "We needed to buy some canvas, some covers, because all the covers were completely wet, even inside the kennels, inside the houses, because the wind was coming from everywhere with the storm. It was unprecedented rain here on our farm and added to the hail, the damage was very great", detailed Fernanda.
