In this first stage, 27 devices will be deployed, distributed across 29 monitoring points and covering 69 traffic lanes on avenues and intersections considered strategic for road safety. According to the municipal administration, the measure is part of a new traffic policy aimed at preventing accidents and reducing risky behavior. In December 2025, RP Mobi, the company that coordinates traffic operations in Ribeirão Preto, stopped using mobile radars. According to the city hall, the points for implementing fixed speed cameras were chosen based on studies that considered vehicle flow, accident history, road characteristics, pedestrian circulation and the need for speed control. When do radars start operating? In this first phase, 18 fixed radars, five hybrid equipment and four electronic speed bumps will be installed. Hybrid radars are capable of monitoring both speeding and running red lights. Electronic speed bumps display the recorded speed to the driver, with the aim of encouraging a reduction in speed in areas of greater attention, such as areas close to schools. The implementation will occur gradually and includes preparing the infrastructure, installing poles and sensors, connecting the systems, positioning the cameras and operational tests. The equipment should only come into operation after the second half of September. This is because it will depend on the measurement carried out by the Institute of Weights and Measures of the State of São Paulo (Ipem-SP), the issuance of technical reports and the verification of road signs. The city hall states that the objective of the new inspection structure is not to increase the application of fines, but to encourage compliance with speed limits, reduce the number of accidents and improve the fluidity of traffic in the city. Traffic deaths The city hall justifies the measure based on the death rates recorded in the city. According to the municipality, 46 people died in traffic accidents in Ribeirão Preto in the first half of 2026. Of these victims, 27 were motorcyclists. The municipal administration states that electronic inspection is part of a set of actions that also includes traffic engineering, education and awareness of drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians.
