He will run for governor for the second time by popular vote, after being re-elected to the state government in 2010. In 1994, he was elected state deputy of Amazonas, receiving the most votes in that election. In 1996, he was elected vice-mayor of Manaus and was also head of the Municipal Department of Works. In 2010, he was elected governor of Amazonas after winning the elections in the first round. Omar was also the target of investigations that uncovered a scheme to divert health resources from Amazonas. The case involved investigations by the Federal Police and the Federal Public Ministry. The operation highlighted suspicions of misuse of public resources in the health sector. The investigation led to the arrests of Omar Aziz's relatives, but the case related to the senator did not move forward due to lack of evidence. In 2021, he gained national prominence by chairing the Covid Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPI) in the Federal Senate, being leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD). As president of the commission, he conducted meetings with ministers and authorities and played a leading role in debates.
