Omar José Abdel Aziz is a civil engineer, senator of the Republic and former governor of Amazonas. He will run for governor for the second time by popular vote, after being re-elected to the state government in 2010. Throughout his political career, he has been a councilor, state deputy, vice-mayor of Manaus and vice-governor of Amazonas. ? The Brazilian Federation of Hope will contest this year's elections formed by the parties PT, PCdoB and PV. Next, the names must be registered with the Superior Court (TSE) by August 15th. The election campaign officially begins the following day. In this year's elections, on October 4th, Brazilians will vote for: president; governor; Senate (two seats per state); federal deputy; state deputy; Omar Aziz's career Omar Aziz was born in the city of Garça, in the interior of São Paulo. He began his public career in the Manaus student movement. In the 1980s, he fought against the military dictatorship and for issues such as half student fare. Since then, he entered a political career. Between 1988 and 1992, affiliated with local parties, he was elected councilor in the capital. In 1994, he was elected state deputy of Amazonas, receiving the most votes in that election. In 1996, he was elected vice-mayor of Manaus and was also head of the Municipal Department of Works. In 2010, he was elected governor of Amazonas after winning the elections in the first round. Omar was also the target of investigations that uncovered a scheme to divert health resources from Amazonas. The case involved investigations by the Federal Police and the Federal Public Ministry. The operation highlighted suspicions of misuse of public resources in the health sector. The investigation led to the arrests of Omar Aziz's relatives, but the case related to the senator did not move forward due to lack of evidence. In 2021, he gained national prominence by chairing the Covid Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPI) in the Federal Senate, being leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD). As president of the commission, he conducted meetings with ministers and authorities and played a leading role in debates.
