The information was released this Monday (13). The inspections targeted public paving works and quarries that supplied material for the services. During inspections, auditors identified accommodation in degrading conditions. Workers slept on mattresses on the floor, in overcrowded properties with no privacy. In the quarries, part of the group lived in canvas shacks and improvised huts within the extraction area itself.

The victims did not have access to drinking water, sanitary facilities and adequate spaces for rest and food. Furthermore, they handled homemade explosives without training or qualifications, with a serious risk of accidents. Remuneration was based on production, calculated per thousand stones cut or square meter of paving laid. Payments occurred without receipts and without the guarantees provided for in labor legislation. Some of the employees had been recruited from other municipalities and depended on employers for housing, food and transportation. The AFT notified companies to regularize the workers' situation, formalize and terminate contracts and pay severance pay. Added to the amounts of individual moral damage, the payments due reach approximately R$520 thousand. Those rescued will have access to specific unemployment insurance for victims of work similar to slavery and were referred to the social protection network. The operation was coordinated by the AFT and participated by the Public Ministry of Labor (MPT), the Federal Public Defender's Office (DPU) and the Federal Police (PF). In addition to Pernambuco, the task force worked in Bahia, where another 20 workers were rescued in similar conditions in the cities of Casa Nova and Sento Sé.
