Bus falls into river after losing control on a ramp in the port of Barcarena The minibus that fell into the Itaporanga River, in Barcarena, remains submerged between 15 and 20 meters deep and represents an obstacle to navigation in the area, according to the Fire Department. The removal of the vehicle was still awaited by the Brazilian Navy and municipal bodies this Thursday (16). According to firefighters, the depth at which the collective was located could compromise vessel traffic, especially during low tide, when vessels with greater draft are at risk of hitting the vehicle. Because of the situation, a private port had to be closed. "The Port of São Francisco is very busy. Passengers come directly from Belém, there are three ports here and, depending on the draft of each vessel, this can affect navigation. If the tide is low, the draft can touch the bus", explained Fire Lieutenant, Denilson Meireles. Another concern for authorities is the possibility of fuel and engine oil leaks, which could cause environmental impacts. According to the director of Environmental Inspection of Barcarena, Gilson Moraes, this is one of the reasons why the vehicle must be removed as soon as possible. Responsibility for removing the minibus lies with the company that owns the vehicle. The passengers managed to get out of the vehicle and were rescued by boatmen who were at the scene. Fire Department divers carried out searches to check for possible victims and confirmed that all occupants managed to survive. The eight people who were in the vehicle received treatment at the Barcarena Emergency Care Unit (UPA) with minor injuries. Barcarena City Hall reported that it is investigating the causes of the accident, including the possibility of mechanical failure. According to the Municipal Traffic Department, the minibus had undergone a biannual inspection and was ready to operate. Witnesses reported that the vehicle began to move on its own on the ramp and pointed out a possible brake failure, a hypothesis that is yet to be investigated.
