The measure was taken after Health Surveillance partially closed the unit's Material and Sterilization Center (CME). The decision was published in the Official Gazette this Friday (17). According to the hospital, an action plan was initiated on Thursday to correct problems in the sector's purified water system. Urgent and emergency care continues as normal. According to the Official Gazette, a report dated June 26 identified an excess of heterotrophic bacteria in the purified water used in the final rinse of materials sterilized by osmosis. ? Heterotrophic bacteria are microorganisms present in the environment that do not produce their own food. They range from bacteria that help decompose organic matter to those that can cause disease, such as staphylococci, streptococci and pseudomonas. An expert interviewed by g1 explained that the presence of these bacteria does not mean, in itself, that the water is contaminated. They function as an indicator of water quality, and a quantity above the limit may indicate failures in some stage of the protection system. Read more below. In a statement, the hospital management informed that surgeries with implants will remain suspended until a new report confirms the quality of the water. There is still no forecast for the issuance of this document. The hospital also informed that a new sample will be collected this Friday (17), after monthly maintenance of the water system. The company responsible for the equipment also carried out a technical inspection on site. "The Brotherhood reinforces that all measures were adopted immediately, prioritizing patient safety and compliance with the most rigorous quality and assistance protocols", stated the unit. g1 also asked Campinas City Hall if the hospital was fined due to the ban. Second case in Campinas This is the second closure of a sterilization center in Campinas announced this week. On Monday (13), the Official Gazette published the ban on cleaning equipment at the Mário Gattinho Pediatric Unit. According to City Hall, Health Surveillance collected water samples on June 10th. The result came out on July 1st and also showed an excess of bacteria. The equipment stopped being used on the same day the report was delivered. Since then, the materials have been sterilized at the Dr. Mário Gatti Municipal Hospital. The municipal administration guaranteed that the change did not affect care and that there were no records of infections in patients. What does excess bacteria mean? Infectious disease specialist Ana Rachel de Seni Rodrigues explains that the high concentration of these bacteria does not necessarily mean that the water has microorganisms capable of causing diseases. "In fact, heterotrophic bacteria mainly function as an indicator of global water quality. When their numbers rise beyond the limit, some water protection barrier has failed," he says. According to the expert, non-standard water can compromise the quality of sterilization of medical materials. "If the water used meets microbiological standards outside the parameters determined by Brazilian legislation, contamination of the materials may occur and this process may not be carried out in accordance with the purpose of this machine", he explains. The doctor emphasizes, however, that the altered exam does not prove that the materials previously used were contaminated. She highlights that hospitals carry out periodic analyzes precisely to identify these changes before they pose a risk to patients.
