Flip welcomes writers and readers from all over Brazil and the world to Paraty The 24th Paraty International Literary Festival (Flip) began on Wednesday (23) with a tribute to the poet Orides Fontela, one of the main names in contemporary Brazilian literature. The writer from São Paulo was chosen as the honored author of this edition, which has poetry as the central axis of the program. Born in São João da Boa Vista (SP), Orides published just over 200 poems distributed in five books and created a work recognized for its philosophical density, rigor in the choice of words and the constant presence of nature. The opening table brought together the poet Marília Garcia and the editor and professor Augusto Massi, responsible for the Orides literary collection. Disclosure/FLIP 2026 Right at the beginning of the conversation, Marília Garcia read an anecdote from the book Enigma and Commentary, bringing the audience closer to a remarkable episode in the author's career. Throughout the table, she highlighted that Orides' poetry is built on silence, mirroring and precision in the choice of words, creating short texts, but open to different interpretations. The essayist also drew attention to the recurring presence of birds in the poet's work and related this element to current environmental discussions. According to her, Orides' writing breaks with traditional musicality by favoring pauses, interruptions and questions that lead the reader to reflection. Augusto Massi highlighted the literary evolution of Orides Fontela. Disclosure/FLIP 2026 Augusto Massi presented an overview of the writer's literary evolution, showing how her work covered different philosophical and religious references, from Catholic training to Greek myths and, later, Zen Buddhism. The editor also highlighted the use of punctuation as an expressive resource, transforming graphic signs into part of the construction of meaning in the poems. The panel also recalled the rapprochement between Orides Fontela and the artist Mira Schendel, highlighting the affinity between the two in the search for synthesis and experimentation with language. With an opening dedicated to the memory and current affairs of Orides Fontela's work, Flip began its program by reaffirming poetry as a space for reflection on language and the human condition.
