Group 'Expedicionarios da Saúde' in Amazonas Disclosure The voluntary organization Expedicionarios da Saúde (EDS) begins, on July 24th, its 58th expedition in the Amazon forest. The action will provide medical, dental care and medium and low complexity surgeries to the indigenous peoples of the Andirá Marau Indigenous Land (TI), located on the border between Amazonas and Pará. The services will be concentrated in the Michiles Island region, focusing on the population of the Sateré-Mawé people, the majority ethnic group in the locality, known culturally for the tucandeira ritual and the production of guaraná. ? Among the services foreseen in the expedition's goal are: Surgeries: ophthalmological procedures (mainly cataracts and pterygium); Exams: general ultrasounds and laboratory tests; Specialized consultations: services in the area of ??gynecology Dentistry: assessments, prophylaxis (cleaning), oral hygiene guidance, minor oral surgery and care for Patients with Special Needs (PNE) in a mobile surgical center. "These actions are very important if we consider the difficulty that indigenous populations have in accessing specialized care and, mainly, surgeries", highlights doctor Ricardo Affonso Ferreira, president and founder of EDS. Logistics and 20 tons of equipment This is the first time in ten years that the group has returned to the region to perform surgical procedures. The last action at TI Andirá Marau took place in 2016, during the NGO's 35th expedition. On that occasion, the structure was set up at the São Pedro Indigenous School, resulting in 1,800 medical visits and almost 5,000 exams. "After so long, there are already new demands for surgery, especially for cataracts, our specialty, because, as it is a disease that appears with age, new cases always appear", explains Genário Kanashiro, director of operations at EDS. The action counts on the institutional partnership of the Secretariat of Indigenous Health (Sesai), the Special Indigenous Health District (Dsei Parintins), local supporters and the community itself, which helps with the works necessary to receive care. According to the organization, part of the structural improvements made for the joint effort will remain permanently for the Michiles Island community. In 23 years of operation, the NGO Expedicionarios da Saúde has already carried out 57 expeditions, totaling more than 10 thousand surgeries, 70 thousand consultations and 126 thousand exams in the Amazon region.
