Investigations indicate that Maria Eduarda was on the sidewalk with two friends when the three were hit by the vehicle. The young woman was rescued, but did not survive her injuries. A friend, also 18 years old, was injured. After the accident, the driver left the scene without providing assistance. He presented himself to the police station the next day and confessed that he was driving the vehicle. In his statement, he reiterated that he fell asleep at the wheel, had consumed alcohol before driving and did not have a license. The Civil Police identified the vehicle through security camera images. The car was seized and the owner reported that he had sublet it to the accused about three months before the accident. During the investigation, the Court denied the request for temporary arrest as it understood that the measure was not necessary for the process to progress. On the other hand, it determined precautionary measures, such as monthly appearances in court, prohibition on changing addresses without authorization and restrictions on leaving the district for more than five days without judicial authorization. The court also authorized the breach of confidentiality of the accused's telephone data to check whether he was using his cell phone at the time of the accident.
