Adjuto Afonso is elected president of Aleam State deputy Adjuto Afonso (União Brasil) was elected president of the Legislative Assembly of Amazonas (Aleam) this Wednesday (15). Adjutant Afonso was elected with 19 votes in favor and five against. The choice occurred following a decision by Minister Flávio Dino, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), who ordered a new vote after suspending the rule that allowed the automatic inauguration of the 1st vice-president in the event of a vacancy in the presidency of the House. Adjuto had already been in charge of Aleam as interim president since April, after Roberto Cidade (União Brasil) left the role to take over the Government of Amazonas. The new president will be sworn in this Wednesday and will serve until January 31, 2027. ? Join the g1 AM channel on WhatsApp After being elected, deputy Adjuto Afonso thanked the votes he received and waved to the parliamentarians who were against his remaining in office. During his speech, he preached the independence of the Legislature and said that the Legislative Assembly “will not be a piggyback” of the state Executive. “This mandate will be one of discussion and dialogue with everyone,” he said. Deputies opposed The election of Adjuto Afonso had the votes against it from five deputies from the PSD and MDB. State deputy Alessandra Campêlo (PSD) justified it by stating that, although she has appreciation and admiration for the parliamentarian, her vote was based on the independence of the Legislative branch. She also highlighted that the PSD bench disagrees with the change in the rule that allowed Adjuto Afonso to remain in office without a new election being held. "The PSD also does not agree with the way in which the position was carried out, in a resolution that dealt with the nomenclature of the Animal Cause Commission. In fact, I think it was an unnecessary strain on this House", said the deputy. In addition to Alessandra, deputies Mayra Dias, Thiago Abrahim, Wilker Barreto and Rozenha voted against. Change in regulations In June, Aleam approved, without debate, a change in the Internal Regulations that allowed the 1st vice-president to become president automatically. The change was contested by the Solidariedade party, which argued that the change was included in a bill unrelated to the topic, characterizing a “jabuti amendment”. Election at Aleam: deputies choose new president of the legislative house In the analysis of Direct Action of Unconstitutionality (ADI) 7984, Flávio Dino suspended the rule and determined that the new president be chosen in a vote in the plenary, as provided for in the Constitution.
