Lack of donors and the feline "bottleneck" "Each bag of blood collected can save up to three lives of dogs and cats. Unfortunately, we need to maintain a constant campaign to obtain donations, especially from felines, which is our biggest bottleneck", explained Érica Pereira, a veterinarian at Hemocev in Alagoas. Cats' blood is divided into types A, B and AB. Dogs are classified using the DEA 1 system (positive and negative). To donate, animals undergo screening that assesses weight, age and general health conditions. Rottweiler Chico: donor for two years At just four years old, Rottweiler Chico has been a blood donor for two years. The dog's owner, soldier Rosana Queiroz, spoke about the benefits of the initiative. Rosana said that she was already a blood donor, but did not know that the practice was also possible for dogs. After seeing a Hemocev campaign on social media, she contacted the institution to ask questions. "The veterinarian reassured me and showed the benefits of donating to Chico. There is no suffering and, above all, it helps other animals that go through health problems, such as cancer and surgeries. Every three months, Chico donates blood", said the owner. In addition to solidarity and social commitment, Rosana explained that the act of donating has guaranteed Chico the completion of all exams, frequent health monitoring, the application of dewormers and vaccines, among other benefits.
