World Cup ends round of 16 with Messi and duel between Switzerland and Colombia

The program starts at 1 pm, Brasília time, with Argentina x Egypt, in Atlanta, in the United States. Lionel Messi's team arrives on the back of a perfect campaign in the group stage and a dramatic victory over Cape Verde, 3-2, in extra time, in the previous stage.

At 39 years old, Messi remains the biggest name in the Argentine national team. The number 10 has seven goals in four matches and shares the World Cup top scorer with Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland. Argentina is trying to keep its dream of a second consecutive championship and fourth world title in its history alive.

On the other hand, Egypt is experiencing its best participation in World Cups. The African team finished second in Group G, with one win and two draws, and eliminated Australia on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Mohamed Salah, who scored one goal in the tournament, is the team's main offensive hope.

Argentina and Egypt have faced each other only twice in history. The first was at the 1928 Olympic Games, in a tournament organized by FIFA, with Argentina beating 6-0. The second took place in a friendly played in 2008, again with Albiceleste winning, this time 2-0.

Later, at 5pm, Switzerland and Colombia enter the field in Toronto, Canada. The duel brings together two teams that led their groups in the first phase and reached the round of 16 with solid campaigns.

Switzerland finished at the top of Group B, ahead of Canada, one of the hosts, and beat Algeria with a 2-0 victory. Colombia, undefeated in Group K, overcame Portugal at the top of the group and eliminated Ghana 1-0 in the previous phase.

Whoever wins will equal the best campaign in their history in World Cups. Switzerland reached the quarterfinals in 1934, 1938 and 1954, but fell into the last three editions. Colombia is looking to repeat its 2014 performance, when it advanced to the quarterfinals before being eliminated by Brazil.

The Swiss are betting on the speed of Johan Manzambi, Ruben Vargas and Breel Embolo, as well as the defensive security of Manuel Akanji. The Colombians have names like Daniel Muñoz, Jhon Arias, Luis Díaz and Davinson Sánchez to try to take the team back to the top 8 of the World Cup.

Switzerland and Colombia faced each other once in the World Cup. In 1998, the Colombians won 2-0 in the group stage, but ended up eliminated at the bottom of the group.
