His resignation, however, was demanded by a large part of analysts, the country's former world champions and public opinion. In an emblematic episode, German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz was the target of a wave of criticism after praising the players' efforts.
It was Germany's third early elimination from the World Cup. In 2018 and 2022, the last World Cups with 32 teams, the team lost even earlier, in the group stage.
According to the DFB, Nagelsmann met with the federation's top brass on Thursday (2) and took three hours to agree to the termination, according to the newspaper Bild, which should also cause casualties among the directors. "The decision was not an easy one for me. My priority has always been the success of the team. After such a bitter disappointment, the players deserve the opportunity for a new start", declared the coach.
The termination is expected to cost the entity's coffers €7 million (R$39.2 million).
In an unusual move by German standards, the DFB announced in a statement that it is close to reaching an agreement with Jürgen Klopp, former coach of Dortmund and Liverpool, currently global football executive at the Red Bull group.
"Regarding the appointment of a new coach, the DFB management will now begin discussions with Jürgen Klopp. He has already expressed his full availability to take on the role."
Shortly after the elimination, on Monday (29), Klopp, who is working as a TV commentator in the USA, was asked by his broadcast colleagues about the chance of taking on the post and preferred to respond that that was "not the time" for the matter.
At the helm of Liverpool, Klopp won the Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup and also ended the team's three-decade absence in the Premier League. In 2024, citing tiredness, he left the English club to take a sabbatical. According to reports, the DFB was already looking for him to take over the national team at that time, but it was not possible to reconcile their schedules.
