Former Flamengo, João Gomes will change teams in England, says newspaper

João Gomes will be Aston Villa's reinforcement for next season. The 25-year-old player left Wolverhampton's pre-season, in Portugal, to undergo medical examinations this Thursday, according to a BBC report. The transfer will cost 38 million pounds (R$ 261 million, at current prices). The English club, current champion of the Europa League, will initially pay out 34 million pounds, in a package that includes another 4 million pounds in goal bonuses, according to information from the British newspaper.

The midfielder was revealed by Flamengo and has played for Wolverhampton since 2023. Despite the team's relegation to the English second division in the 2025/26 season, the player started 35 of the 38 games in the Premier League and stood out with good performances. Thus, it attracted interest to remain in the elite.

Before Aston Villa, Atlético de Madrid was close to signing João Gomes. The Spanish club came forward with a proposal valued at 45 million euros (R$ 263.5 million, at current prices) and even agreed salary terms with the midfielder. The deal, however, was undone thanks to an impasse with the player's representatives.

João Gomes lives with the expectation of returning to the Brazilian team. The athlete was called up only once by coach Carlo Ancelotti, for friendlies against Japan and South Korea, in October 2025, but he did not take the field in those matches.
