If July 13th is World Rock Day, as the pop universe calendar states, today is the day to remember Sérgio Augusto Bustamante (November 8th, 1933 – June 7th, 2019), the rocker from Rio who died at the age of 85 in Volta Redonda (RJ), six years ago, and immortalized with the stage name Serguei. An artist with a legendary aura who entered the scene 60 years ago, Serguei embodied the irreverent and crazy spirit of this rock'n'roll. He left a sparse discography, consisting of two albums and some singles released between 1966 and 2009, with emphasis on the 1991 album. However, if the singer's work was small, the folklore surrounding the existence of Serguei, the rocker who walked around with a t-shirt that read “Eu comi a Janis Joplin”, is extensive. True? Serguei swore that, yes, he had had a sexual relationship with the American singer Janis Joplin (1943 – 1970), with whom he in fact seems to have had some contact – at least social… – in San Francisco (USA) in 1967, three years before meeting Janis again in Brazil, precisely on the night of Copacabana, in February 1970 when he was working as a singer in a nightclub in the Rio neighborhood. Serguei experienced the trinomial sex, drugs (especially LSD) and rock'n'roll, not to mention alcohol consumed in large doses. More entertainer than singer, as he himself sincerely admitted, Serguei absorbed the crazy life with the ardor of a boy. He said he had no age or sex. Before dedicating himself to rock, Serguei was a flight attendant, banker, office boy and kitchen assistant. He even tried in vain for a political career in the Rio de Janeiro city of Saquarema (RJ), where he lived for decades, but was never elected councilor. In essence, what Serguei became was a rock legend, insisting on youth and living outside social conventions with the freedom possible in a restrictive world. Therefore, Serguei lives in memory as the symbol of rebellion attributed to rock. Serguei was more of a rocker than a rocker controlled by the system. So every July 13th is Serguei Day!
